Peter and Jane

Peter was 62 years old and looking forward to retiring and being able to play more golf and travel with his wife. Most of his working life was with the banking industry and his family had gained independence and left home.

In April 2004. Peter went to his GP as he was having difficulty passing urine. Blood tests were taken and he was found to have a PSA level of 6.3. Peter was referred to a Urologist, had prostate biopsies and recommended brachytherapy as treatment.

Thankfully Peter and Jane had health insurance as they were advised the cost of this treatment would be $22,000. Peter was able to have the treatment, and because he got prior approval the providers were paid directly and he was able to contentrate on a speedy recovery and a return to the golf course.

SAM the Builder

Sam has been a builder since he left school at 15. But at the age 44 he was in an accident which broke his neck, leaving him paralysed. Among other things, this meant that he could no longer build for a living.

While glad to be alive, the enormity of being unlikely to ever again return to work was overwhelming. He was unsure as to what he would do or how he would continue to pay the mortgage on the home he was renovating with his wife.

But because Sam had Permanent Disability Insurance he could use the lump sum to help supplement the disability benefit he received from the government. It was also used to finish the renovations he had started to the house and pay everyday bills.

While Sam is unlikely to ever again return to work, the financial stress was reduced because he had Permanent Disability Insurance.
